One day
You and I will fall to pieces,
And they'll come and swirl together
'Till they make up something new;
And someday,
When it's all black holes and ashes,
When the dust gets tired of drifting,
It'll fall to pieces too.
But right now
There's a planet on the viewscreen,
We are here and we are listening,
We are coming in to land —
And it's night out:
Take your warmest coat and mittens;
And the day might bring a difference,
So, for now, just take my hand.
When it falls away, I notice where I stand,
But when I'm standing firm, I know just what it's for;
And if my mind begins to break under the strain of doing pointless things
I go up to the door
And think a little more,
And dream a little more about how
One day
You and I will make a promise
In the void between the systems,
In the rest between the notes;
And somehow,
When the world starts up and alters,
Even though we'll never notice,
It'll slightly shift our course.
And right now
There's a café 'round the corner
Where the morning special offers
Have the most delightful tea —
And someday
We'll get up again
And, back to back and hand in hand,
We'll sing a song of knowing how to be.
